Alfred Hobson is a nerdy associate professor at a small undistinguished California college. His student, Catarina Perez Valdez, is one of the zany citizens of a quirky Central American republic. Cat enlists Hobson in a quest to help her father regain his rightful position as “el presidente” of Granada Negra by recovering a giant ruby that’s the country’s symbol of political power the Black Pomegranate. Somewhere along the way Alfred and Catarina fall in love.

BLACK POMEGRANATE is a romantic adventure, a modern-day fairy tale, a slapstick laugh-aloud comedy, a thriller, a page-turner—and thoroughly delightful reading.

The plot of this book lacks the same sophistication as its cover, which doesn't scream 'read me', alas.

And that's a bit of a shame, because the actual writing isn't at all bad. It's rather good, in fact. It’s articulate, fluid, expressive…which I think is what helped me limp along to the end of the book.

Thankfully, though, the plot doesn’t take itself too seriously… the reader shouldn’t either, and you can just about do that until about halfway, at which point, it really gets a little bit silly.

A beautiful, Hispanic student persuades a geeky, nerdy, lanky, unkempt computer lecturer to help her with her studies so that she can save her little South American republic, Granada Negra (Black Pomegranate), from the rebels seeking political power. They make a rather unlikely couple…but well, Beauty and the Beast made a pretty good story, I suppose. But then the detail overstretches the imagination somewhat and what could have been a quirky, albeit totally unlikely, little tale just gets rather ridiculous.

However, I can’t deny that I enjoyed the style of the writer and I was über, über impressed by the impeccable editing. And I don’t get to say that often about the books I read. I certainly won’t rule out another book by this author.

Professor Hobson and Catarina try to do alot together such as overthrowing the president of a small country in South America. Trouble is, he happens to be Catarina's father. This was a great book to read, very enjoyable and kept my interest. I'm hoping the author writes more, I will be reading them!
I'm still not sure if this is a romance, a mystery or a comedy . . . but it's a great read.

Mr. Cowles turns an ugly duckling academic into a swash-buckling swan who saves the princess while outwitting inept bad guys and dastardly usurpers.

That he gets revenge along the way with a former boss, confuses a dozen (not so) secret agents and manages to get in a few good meals comes under the category of frosting on a very rich cake.

So, pour a cup of Granada Negran prime coffee, settle back in your favourite chair and - Enjoy!
The course of events throughout this story goes from unlikely, to impossible, to nearly implausible. But if you can you suspend your disbelief and go along for the wild ride, it is a wickedly funny tale full of hysterically funny scenes. The main character (and a few secondary characters) gets his world turned completely upside down in a progression of situations that stretch him beyond his normal limits. And he steps up to the challenge in ways that he would not have thought himself capable of at the beginning of the story. I loved the humor and very much appreciated the laughs!

Alfred Hobson is a computer instructor at a small Southern California college, Timberline College, and is a verified "nerd", down to the last detail. Along comes a new student, Catarina, who is the daughter of the President in exile of a fictional Latin American country. Catarina first begins by making over Alfred into a hero, and then in the process of their relationship, she gets Alfred involved in foiling the whole plot to overthrow her father. It all goes even to the point of having him help her break into the country's national bank and wire transfer her father's money elsewhere. Of course, all things work out in the end and we have a happily ever after ending. The crazy twists and turns the plot takes are wild, for sure, but this is all in fun - a very amusing, light read. I highly enjoyed it.

This book follows a nerdy Professor Hobson and exotic Catarina as they try to thwart a plot to murder/overthrow Catarina's father, president of a small Central American country. In addition to the adventure aspects, which are reminiscent of "Romancing the Stone", there are also a lot of laugh out loud comedic moments. Some of the characters are larger than life, which causes them to literally be taken along for the ride. I can't remember the last time I just thoroughly enjoyed such a casual read. It is an easy enough read that you can read for a while and put it down and come back to it later without having to backtrack to remember what's going on. But it has enough action and plot twists to keep you guessing and coming back. I remember thinking as I was reading, "This is fun"! So, give it a try! I can't wait for the next book from this author.
First let me say that I received this book for free through book rooster.com and I have not been paid for this review.

I enjoyed reading this book. Alfred Hobson is a computer instructor at Timberline College in California when Catarina comes into his life. She is his student who has come to the United States from the fictional South American country of Granada Negra. Her father is the president, but is in exile because Pancho Villa (not the Mexican revolutionary, just the same name) has taken over the country. Cat enlists her college professor to assist in removing Villa and restoring her father as "el presidente.". While in the US, she has bodyguards (twins Pablo and Pietro) who follow them and her uncle calls on a regular basis to give her updates of things he is "absolutely certain" of.

Eventually, the now-couple must travel to the fictional country through a variety of means that sound as though the writer might enjoy the Mission Impossible movies. As I read the journey, I kept thinking it was impossible to do all of this, but I thoroughly enjoyed his creativity. I won't give anything away, but I will say there is a happy ending.

I enjoyed this book and I will be looking for other books by this author. It was fast-paced, easy to read and as I said, very creative! Thanks for a fun read!
